Embryo implantation in the uterus is a complex process and one of the important factors that play a role in embryo implantation is embryo quality. Current genetic screening techniques using fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) can only assess a limited number of chromosomes but trophectoderm biopsy from blastocyst embryos combined with the technique of comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) allows for the analysis of all 24 chromosomes. Results can be available in a matter of hours, allowing timely embryo transfer. This novel approach to screening embryos can reduce genetic misdiagnosis of embryos and can potentially increase IVF success rates.
