What is Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis?
Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, commonly referred to as PGD, refers to procedures that include the screening of embryos during IVF treatment for genetic or chromosomal disorders. PGD occurs after fertilization and before the embryo transfer to the woman's uterus. Women that have had multiple miscarriages or failed IVF cycles also use PGD to test the health of their embryos. Some couples use PGD for gender selection. Using PGD, embryos can be tested for the sex of the baby, though the results are not guaranteed.
PGD, IVF & Diagnosis
PGD testing is used to discover possible disorders in the embryonic stage. During diagnosis, one cell from an eight cell embryo is removed for DNA analysis, usually on the third day of embryonic development. Removing one cell from an embryo will not affect its future health or development. If the embryo is determined to be free of disorders, it is confirmed for use in IVF.

PGD is not perfect, but the use of this fertility treatment is highly recommended for couples with genetic or chromosomal concerns.
